Podcast: How to protect your domain registration accounts against attack or misuse

I recently had the opportunity to record a podcast with my friend and ICANN colleague, Scott Pinzon, on the subject of protecting domain registration accounts against attack or misuse. We discuss a recent report from ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee that tackles this problem space with a vengeance. Some of the questions Scott asks (and I attempt to answer) are listed below:

  • What kinds of attacks or misuse does SSAC's report consider?
  • Can these attacks lead to other kinds of attacks?
  • Are the measures SSAC recommends practical for individuals and micro-businesses or are they only interesting for large organization?
  • Are domain name holders really on their own, can registrars or other providers able to help, and if yes, does the report tell me how to make an informed choice?
  • Can you make a case that this report is relevant for the skeptics of the world who believe "I don’t really have any enemies, and most people don’t know about my account. I don’t think anybody’s going to come after me. And I think probably my registrar protects my account anyway.”?

    Our Interisle team today announced the publication of an industry report, Phishing Landscape 2024, A Study of the Scope and Distribution of Phishing. The 1Q2024 Top 20 TLDs included 10 new gTLDs, 6 ccTLDs, and 4 legacy gTLDs. Only three TLDs remained in the top 5 TLDs (COM, NET, INFO) from the prior quarter. The ORG and BR TLDs were replaced by SHOP (over 3,000% increase) and TOP (over 700% increase). All but one registrar in 1Q2024’s Top 20 registrar ranking showed increases of 100% or more.
